Popsugar #5 – A book set in a city that hosted the Olympics

In honor of the fact that the Summer Olympics were originally going to be held this summer, Popsugar created several Olympics themed prompts including this one: A book set in a city that hosted the Olympics.

I thought this one might be hard but it turns out to be one of the first ones that I’ve completed. There are so many major cities that have both hosted the Olympics and have had great books set in them! Olympic cities are:

  • Athens, Greece
  • Paris, France
  • St. Louis, Missouri, US
  • London, England
  • Stockholm, Sweden
  • Antwerp, Belgium
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Los Angeles, California, US
  • Berlin, Germany
  • London, England
  • Helsinki, Finland
  • Melbourne, Australia
  • Rome, Italy
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Mexico City, Mexico
  • Munich, Germany
  • Montreal, Canada
  • Moscow, Soviet Union
  • Seoul, South Korea
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Atlanta, Georgia, US
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Beijing, China
  • Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Chamonix, France
  • St. Moritz, Switzerland
  • Lake Placid, New York, US
  • Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
  • Oslo, Norway
  • Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
  • Squaw Valley, California, US
  • Innsbruck, Austria
  • Grenoble, France
  • Sapporo, Japan
  • Sarajevo, Yugoslavia
  • Calgary, Canada
  • Albertville, France
  • Lillehammer, Norway
  • Nagano, Japan
  • Salt Lake City, Utah, US
  • Turin, Italy
  • Vancouver, Canada
  • Sochi, Russia
  • Pyeongchang, South Korea

So many great cities!!! There are a great number of books set in London or Paris… that’s where the book that I decided to use is set.

I read The Paris Hours and when I was looking to see which books I could put where, I realized that it was the perfect book for this prompt. The Paris Hours by Alex George, published by Flatiron Books on May 5, 2020. It follows several people during one day in Paris in 1927. I really enjoyed it, especially Camille’s story. I loved how the side or secondary characters included Marcel Proust, Ernest Hemingway, Josephine Baker and Gertrude Stein. I really enjoyed it and gave it 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

It’s is personal preference as to how closely you want to stick to the prompt. Some people are ok if the book only takes place for a chapter or two in the city. Some people feel the whole book needs to take place in the city. Since there are no rules for the Popsugar Reading Challenge, it’s up to you. I personally decided that I wanted a book that was entirely set in the Olympics city.

Another book that I’ve read which would fit the prompt is The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, published by Celadon Books in Feb 2019, is set in London, England. It was a great psychological thriller that I gave 4 out of 5 stars. It follows a psychologist and his patient in a mental hospital who killed her husband and hasn’t spoken a word since.

Both of these books I purchased via my Book of the Month membership.
