In case you don’t already know… TBR = To Be Read. I have a ridiculous in real life TBR pile and my one one Goodreads is even worse. I get joy and comfort from digging through books and finding new ones to read. This morning I decided to focus on #blackauthors. I found an article on Book Riot where they did a really good job outlining all of the books that are coming out this year. A couple that caught my attention are:
When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole – A thriller set in Brooklyn.
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn – A fantasy book that has some magic.

A couple of authors that I already know I love are:
Angie Thomas – I read The Hate U Give and was immediately impacted. I have On The Come Up on my IRL TBR and will be moving that up and reading it soon.
Nicola Yoon – I read The Sun is Also a Star a month or two ago and fell in love. I was crying by the end of the book. It really touched me. She also wrote Everything, Everything and I’ll be getting it soon.
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi – A fantasy YA book that is highly rated on Goodreads. I keep looking at this one and I have no clue why I haven’t added it. The beginning of a series that came out in 2018. The second book came out last year.
A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A Brown – Another fantasy YA book that was released a couple of days ago, inspired by West African folklore.
Kindred by Octavia E Butler – I can’t believe I’ve never read this sci fi classic! So many of my bookish friends have already read this and given it very, very high ratings. I feel like I’m missing out!
Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor – A YA fantasy set in Nigeria, it follows Sunny who is albino.
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton – I think I’m on a fantasy kick right now because this is another… set in Orleans. Something keeps drawing me to this one and my reading twin on Goodreads said that this is a great guilty pleasure book!
The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds – A YA contemporary fiction that deals with grief.
Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D Jackson – A mystery following the disappearance of a girl.
Dear Martin by Nic Stone – It tackles race relations in America that follows an honor student and what happens once a police officer puts him in hand cuffs.. so very relevant to what is going on in the US right now.
When Death Comes Stealing by Valerie Wilson Wesley – This is the first book in a private eye series focused on Tamara Hayle, a former cop turned PI, set in Newark, NJ, published in 1994. I wonder how many hidden gems might exist out there by Black authors that were published in the past and not given the attention that they deserved.
I’m currently reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett… I’m halfway through and absolutely LOVING it!!!
I stuck with fiction books for this post. There are so many great books that I probably missed, this is just a list that I created after a cursory search this morning. Let me know if you have any more that you’ve found!

Charlotte, I think you will really like Children of Blood and Bone. I have not gotten to book 2 yet, but it is on my stacks somewhere!
